Have you been browsing the web to find out how to become a ski instructor? Probably because this job makes you dream, right? You’re not wrong, there are worse jobs! You probably don’t fully understand how the diploma works yet, but reading between the lines, you’ve figured out that first, you have to pass a test before you can lead kids in snowplow turns while shouting “Come on, follow me!”

The Ski Test Technique: the first step to becoming a ski instructor

So far, nothing too complicated. On paper, it seems quick. You get an entry test, a bit like the exam to enter high school. This key step is the Test Technique, which allows you to access the first stage of the State Ski Instructor diploma. Passing this test gives you access to the prestigious ENSA (École Nationale de Ski et d’Alpinisme) in Chamonix, where you’ll complete the first training unit (UF1). It’s 15 days of training, after which you can teach beginner skiers for pay at any ski school in France. Pretty cool, right. But (yes, there’s always a “but”), I said earlier that “on paper, it seems quick.” Why the little hint?

The Test Technique: a selective but achievable challenge

Because this test is a timed special slalom, it’s not something everyone can pass. The success rate is around 25–30%. And the candidates? Young skiers who grew up on the slopes, went through ski clubs, sometimes even former racers, basically, strong and skilled. But don’t leave just yet—if you’re still reading, it shows you’re motivated. And that motivation is the foundation for success.

How does the Ski Test Technique work?

You get two attempts per season: one in December/January, and the other in March/April. On the big day, course setters (the pros) run the slalom and establish a reference time. To pass the test, you must:

  • Be within 20% of the reference time if you are a man

  • Be within 25% of the reference time if you are a woman

Miss by a hundredth of a second? You fail. It’s up to you to make sure that hundredth works in your favor!

What to do after passing the Ski Test Technique?

Now you really get into the heart of it. To earn the full title of State-certified ski instructor, you’ll need to complete 10 Training Units, totaling 16 weeks of training. After that, you’ll be able to teach all levels, both on-piste and off-piste, as well as all skiing activities. And yes, it’s definitely not just “snowplow turns”!
