For the more adventurous, the full descent of the canyon includes abseils over 25 meters and a more intense adventure.
The Belle au Bois canyon, located in Megève, offers a magical natural setting while featuring thrilling obstacles such as slides, jumps, and abseils up to 30 meters! What exactly is canyoning ?
Canyoning combines walking, swimming, jumping, rappelling, and natural slides to explore canyons and gorges. It is the most thrilling white-water activity! It's a great time to share with friends or family. The water is often very cold, which makes the activity very refreshing in the summer!
What equipment is included or should be brought?
The provided equipment includes:
- The full-body wetsuit
- Neoprene shoes and socks
- The hamess
- The helmet
You will need to bring:
- A swimsuit
- A towel
What are the prerequisites for the activity?
To go canyoning, you must:
- Be able to swim 25 meters
- Not be afraid of water, and even feel comfortable in it
- Minors must be accompanied by an adult
Is canyoning difficult ?
Overall, it's not a difficult activity. There are different levels that cater to everyone, allowing beginners to easily get started and more experienced participants to challenge themselves.
Am I required to do the jumps?
Generally, there is always an escape route offered, for example, in the Barberine canyon where an alternative trail is available to avoid the jumps. Otherwise, you can rappel down to land more gently in the water!
At what heights are the rappels ?
Rappels can vary from 7m for the smaller canyons, like those that are more family-friendly, to 30m for the more thrilling ones!
For rappelling, you will be equipped with a harness, and you can descend while being secured by your guide, or you can try to take control with expert advice!
When to go canyoning ?
It all depends on the area, based on the water flow and snowmelt. For lower routes, it’s possible to start as early as mid-May. For those at higher altitudes, you'll have to wait until mid-July, like in Megève, for example.
A typical canyoning outing
You will start by meeting the guide who will accompany you throughout the outing. They will give you a safety briefing while getting you equipped. Then, you will begin the activity with your feet in the water and explore the chosen canyon, facing various obstacles (rappels, jumps, waterfalls), following the guide's advice. It’s sure to be an exciting adventure!
Who can do canyoning?
Canyoning is an activity accessible from the age of 6 in family-friendly and discovery routes. It is not necessary to have great physical fitness to get started or try it out.
It is recommended not to have a fear of heights to comfortably overcome the obstacles.
For the most thrilling canyons, you must be at least 12 years old.
