What is nordic skiing

Cross-country skiing, also known as Nordic skiing, is a form of skiing that takes place on flat or gently rolling terrain. Unlike alpine skiing, where you descend slopes, cross-country skiing is primarily done on flat ground or slight inclines, using either an alternating glide technique or skate skiing, with movements similar to walking or running.

Cross-country skis are thinner and longer than alpine skis, and the bindings only secure the front part of the foot, allowing significant flexibility at the heel.

What are the benefits of nordic skiing ?

Cross-country skiing is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that engages all muscle groups, improving overall fitness and endurance. It is accessible to all skill levels and ages, making it ideal for beginners as well as experienced skiers. It allows you to enjoy winter landscapes in peace, often away from the more crowded alpine ski slopes.

How to dress to do nordic skiing ?

For cross-country skiing, prioritize layering with:

  • Breathable base layer: Wear clothing made from breathable materials (close to the body to wick away sweat and keep the skin dry).
  • Insulating mid-layer: Use a fleece or wool layer for thermal insulation while remaining breathable.
  • Lightweight, windproof, waterproof outer layer: Choose a jacket that protects against snow or rain.
  • Cross-country ski pants: Opt for pants specifically designed for cross-country skiing, often made from stretch, windproof, and breathable materials.
  • Gloves or mittens: Wear gloves or mittens suitable for cross-country skiing.
  • Lightweight hat or headband: A light hat or headband is usually sufficient for your head. Ensure it's made from breathable material to prevent overheating.
  • Sunglasses or Goggles: Protect your eyes from sunlight reflecting off the snow and from the elements with sunglasses or goggles.
