It’s official the countdown is on! You’ve booked your ski holiday, chosen your resort, found the perfect accommodation, and your trip is just around the corner. Soon you’ll be back on the slopes, chasing that amazing feeling of freedom on the snow. But don’t forget: skiing is a real sport. Before you clip back into your skis, here are a few tips to get your body ready for the season and avoid injuries (and those dreaded evening aches and pains).

Why get your body ready before skiing?

Skiing isn’t just about cruising down the slopes in style:  it’s a real sport that takes plenty of energy. Between burning thighs, fast-beating lungs, and the balance you need to stay upright… a little preparation goes a long way.

  • Legs and glutes: your best allies for absorbing bumps and linking turns without shaking.

  • Abs and back: the secret to staying stable and avoiding falls.

  • Cardio system: what keeps you going, run after run, without running out of steam.

The good news? You don’t need to spend every night at the gym! Just a few simple exercises in the weeks leading up to your trip will have you ready to hit the slopes at full speed – and without (too many) sore muscles at the end of the day.

Rock-solid thighs

When it comes to skiing, burning thighs are part of the deal. So let’s get them ready! The muscles that work the most are, of course, in the lower body. That’s why it’s important to prepare, tone, and strengthen them before hitting the slopes.

  • Squats: Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart, back straight. Bend your knees and push your hips back as if sitting on a chair, lowering until your thighs are roughly parallel to the ground. Push back up through your heels.

  • Wall sit: Lean your back against a wall and slide down until your thighs are parallel to the floor, knees bent at 90°. Hold the position without moving.

  • Lunges: Take a big step forward, bend both knees, then push back up before switching legs.

  • Light jumps: A great way to wake up your reflexes and build explosiveness.

Work on balance and proprioception

Balance is the key to staying in control of your skis. On the snow, everything comes down to balance! These exercises help sharpen your reflexes and boost your stability.

  • Single-leg stance: Stand on one leg for 30 seconds. To make it harder, use an unstable cushion or close your eyes.

  • Dynamic plank: In a plank position, lift one arm or one leg at a time to engage your core muscles.

Improve your cardio endurance

Skiing is physical. And to avoid running out of breath at the bottom of the slopes on day one, here are a few tips to boost your cardio before hitting the resort:

  • Go for a run, bike ride, swim, or jump rope session: 30 minutes, 2 to 3 times per week is enough.

  • Interval training (e.g. 1 minute fast / 1 minute slow): perfect for simulating the intense effort of a descent followed by recovery.

Stretching and mobility

Stretching is often overlooked… but it can actually save your holiday by easing tension. It’s also your best ally for perfect recovery.

  • Gentle yoga or simple stretches for thighs, hips, and back.

  • Just 10 minutes of light stretching after exercise = fewer sore muscles and more energy the next day.

Little to do list !

Skiing is all about having fun first. But here are a few handy tips to make sure your holiday is a total success:

  • Pick the right gear: skis that match your level and well-fitted boots are the secret to feeling comfortable and progressing without struggle.

  • Stay hydrated: at altitude, you lose water faster than you think. A sip of water between runs and you’re ready to go again!

  • Take it step by step: start with easy slopes to wake up your muscles before tackling the reds and blacks.

  • Protect yourself: helmet on, ski goggles (or sunglasses), and sunscreen are your best mountain buddies.
